Acharya, who holds a degree in medicine and resides in Singapore with her family, made the announcement via a cryptic post on social media platform X. In her statement, she mentioned being directed to quit politics and disown her family by Sanjay Yadav and Rameez, both reportedly close aides of her brother Tejashwi Yadav. She stated, "I am quitting politics and I am disowning my family…This is what Sanjay Yadav and Rameez had asked me to do…and I am taking all the blame". The reasons behind these alleged directives remain unclear.

Rohini Acharya's decision follows the RJD's poor performance in the recent Bihar Assembly elections, where the party's seat tally decreased significantly. The NDA secured a decisive victory, winning 202 of the 243 seats, reaffirming Nitish Kumar's position as Chief Minister for a fifth consecutive term.

Acharya's entry into politics began with her candidacy in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the Saran constituency. Although she lost to BJP's Rajiv Pratap Rudy, her foray into politics was seen as a significant moment for the RJD. Prior to her political debut, Rohini Acharya gained widespread recognition for her selfless act of donating a kidney to her father, Lalu Prasad Yadav, in 2022. The kidney transplant took place in Singapore, where she resides with her husband and children.
