Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has dismissed recent speculation surrounding Arne Slot's future at Anfield as premature. The comments come in the wake of Liverpool's disappointing 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest at home, a result that has extended their poor run of form to six defeats in their last seven Premier League games.
Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports' "Monday Night Football," acknowledged the mounting pressure on Slot but insisted that any talk of him losing his job this season is unwarranted. He highlighted the fact that Slot guided Liverpool to a league title in his first season, a feat that should afford him more patience and support.
"To win a league title in your first season is pretty special, but I have the feeling he (Slot) doesn't have the unconditional love and support like Jurgen Klopp always had," Carragher said. He drew a comparison to Klopp's early days at Liverpool, recalling a period when the team lost six consecutive home games in the league. Despite those struggles, Carragher noted, there was never any serious discussion about Klopp's position being in jeopardy.
Carragher attributed the heightened scrutiny on Slot to the demanding nature of managing a club of Liverpool's stature. He emphasized that Slot is now in charge of one of the biggest clubs in the world, and with that comes intense pressure and expectations.
While Carragher acknowledged that Slot may not currently enjoy the same level of "unconditional love and support" that Klopp had, he believes it is too early to judge the Dutchman's tenure. He suggested that Slot "doesn't trust" his squad. Carragher has previously pointed out that the current squad was built in the image of Jurgen Klopp, and Slot needs to be given the opportunity to shape the team according to his own vision. This may involve strengthening key areas in the summer transfer window, particularly in central defense and midfield.
Carragher also took aim at Mohamed Salah, criticizing the Egyptian forward for not stepping up and taking responsibility during the team's recent struggles. He contrasted Salah's current silence with his willingness to speak out a year ago when discussing his contract situation. Carragher's comments echo those of Wayne Rooney, who suggested that Slot should consider dropping Salah to try and reignite his form.
Looking ahead, Carragher maintains that Liverpool should be competitive, provided they have a good summer transfer window. He expressed confidence in the structure behind the scenes at the club, suggesting it is more robust than what existed at Manchester United after Alex Ferguson's departure or at Arsenal following Arsene Wenger's exit. This structure, Carragher believes, will help Liverpool avoid a significant drop-off in performance.
