Six police officers were injured in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal, on Friday night when a mob attacked them while they were arresting a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker. The incident occurred in the Boyermari village within the Sandeshkhali block, North 24 Parganas district, according to police reports.
A team from Nazat police station had arrived to arrest Musa Mollah, a TMC activist, on charges of forcibly seizing local water bodies for pisciculture. As police took Mollah into custody and placed him in a police vehicle, a group of villagers allegedly began pelting stones, damaging the vehicle and injuring the officers. The injured policemen, including one officer, were treated at a local hospital and subsequently discharged. Mollah was taken to the police station only after additional forces arrived to disperse the mob.
In addition to Mollah's arrest, two local TMC leaders, including a gram panchayat pradhan, were detained for allegedly instigating the violence against the police.
The incident is reminiscent of a similar event nearly a year prior, on January 5, 2024, when an Enforcement Directorate (ED) team was attacked in the same area. The ED team was attempting to raid the residence of Sheikh Shahjahan, a local TMC leader and Zilla Parishad member, concerning an alleged ration distribution scam. Shahjahan was later arrested by the CBI and remains in judicial custody.
Sajal Ghosh, a BJP leader, responded to the recent incident by criticizing the TMC and the Mamata Banerjee government, stating that the attack reflects the "desperation and brazenness" of TMC activists. He questioned whether the state police would "muster the courage to stand up against the ruling party and take appropriate action".
Arup Chakraborty, a TMC spokesperson, condemned the attack, stating that the party does not support such activities and that the attack on the police was deplorable.
