In light of the escalating security situation in Iran, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has strongly advised Indian nationals residing in Iran to leave the country by any means available. The advisory, issued on January 14, 2026, urges approximately 9,000 Indian citizens, including students, pilgrims, businesspersons, and tourists, to depart Iran immediately, utilizing commercial flights or any other available transportation.
This recent advisory follows an earlier caution issued on January 5, 2026, where the MEA advised Indian citizens and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) to exercise caution and avoid non-essential travel to Iran. The MEA has now escalated its guidance to a "do not travel" advisory, strongly advising against any travel to Iran until further notice.
The decision to issue this advisory comes amid growing concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Iran, marked by widespread protests and a severe crackdown by security forces. These protests initially erupted in Tehran due to the Iranian currency, the rial, plummeting to record lows but have since spread across all 31 provinces, evolving into demands for political change. Reports indicate that the unrest has resulted in a significant number of casualties.
The Indian Embassy in Tehran has urged all Indian nationals and people of Indian origin to exercise due caution, avoid areas of protests or demonstrations, stay in contact with the embassy, and monitor local media for developments. The embassy has also requested that all Indian nationals in Iran keep their travel and immigration documents, including passports and IDs, readily available.
To assist Indian citizens, the Indian Embassy in Tehran has provided emergency contact helplines: +989128109115; +989128109109; +989128109102; +989932179359, and can be reached via email at cons.tehran@mea.gov.in. Indian nationals living in Iran on resident visas are also advised to register with the Indian Embassy if they have not already done so. The MEA has also requested that families in India register on behalf of any Indian national in Iran who may be experiencing internet disruptions.
In preparation to assist citizens returning home, the MEA is reportedly making arrangements to help facilitate their safe return. This may include the operation of special flights.
The evolving situation in Iran has prompted India to take proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens, urging them to leave the country while closely monitoring developments and offering assistance through its embassy in Tehran.
