Nitin Nabin, a 45-year-old politician, is set to take over as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president today, January 20, 2026, after emerging as the sole candidate in the race. The formal declaration and transition ceremony will occur at the party headquarters, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior BJP leaders in attendance.
Nabin's unopposed election marks a generational shift within the BJP, coinciding with the party's 45-year history. As one of the youngest presidents to hold the position, he is expected to usher in a new era for the party as it looks towards the future. He succeeds J.P. Nadda, who served as BJP president since 2020.
The election process began after more than 50% of the BJP's state presidents were elected. According to Dr. K Laxman, the National Returning Officer, 37 sets of nomination papers were filed in support of Nitin Nabin, all of which were found to be valid.
Nitin Nabin was born on May 23, 1980, in Ranchi, Jharkhand. He comes from a political family; his father, the late Shri Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha, was a senior BJP leader and a four-time Member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly from Patna West. Nabin received his early education at St. Michael's High School in Patna and later attended CSKM Public School in New Delhi.
Nabin's political career began in 2006 when he won a by-election from Patna West and became a Member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly. Since 2010, he has been continuously elected from the Bankipur Assembly Constituency in the Bihar Legislative Assembly elections. He has also held significant ministerial positions in the Bihar Government, including Minister of Road Construction, Minister of Urban Development & Housing, and Minister of Law & Justice.
Before becoming the National President, Nabin served as the National Working President of the BJP. He has also held various organizational positions within the BJP, including National General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) and State President of BJYM Bihar. He has been involved in youth mobilization campaigns and has held organizational responsibilities in states such as Sikkim and Chhattisgarh. A meeting of the National Council of the BJP is expected to be held soon to ratify the election.
