The relationship between KL Rahul and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) owner Sanjiv Goenka has been a recurring topic of discussion in the Indian Premier League (IPL) sphere. While Rahul led the team for three seasons, signs of strain emerged, particularly during the 2024 season. This ultimately led to Rahul's departure from the franchise and subsequent acquisition by Delhi Capitals (DC). Recent events and revelations shed more light on the dynamics between the player and the owner, offering insights into what might have transpired behind the scenes.
One of the most talked-about incidents was the animated discussion between Goenka and Rahul following LSG's crushing defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2024. The visuals of Goenka seemingly reprimanding Rahul went viral, sparking criticism from fans and experts who felt it was inappropriate to conduct such a conversation publicly. KL Rahul admitted that the animated chat "affected the entire group"
Adding fuel to the fire, Goenka made indirect comments about prioritizing players who put the team before personal goals. Rahul responded by expressing his desire for a "fresh start" and a more "free" environment. After being acquired by Delhi Capitals for Rs 14 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction, Rahul said “The decision had already been made. I wasn't too bothered by what was said after. I just wanted a fresh start, to play in an environment where I have more freedom and where the atmosphere is lighter. The IPL comes with enough pressure already,”
Interestingly, former India spinner Amit Mishra, who was part of the LSG setup, recently offered a different perspective on the Goenka-Rahul dynamic. Mishra suggested that Goenka's intentions were positive, emphasizing his desire for the team to exhibit a fighting spirit. He also revealed that, according to the coach, KL Rahul was single-handedly managing important tasks such as "making the 11s, making all the changes, and planning". However, Mishra noted a change in the team's approach this year, with greater involvement from Zaheer Khan and more open discussions among the team members.
Despite the tensions, Goenka has publicly expressed goodwill towards Rahul. He called Rahul a "decent and honest person" and stated that Rahul will always be family. Goenka said, "Shareef insaan hai (He is a good person)," he said. "He is a very honest and decent person and I wish that everything good happens to an honest person like him. He is also very talented and I wish he displays his talent to the world. I am very sure he will do well. My best wishes are with him."
The recent encounter between Rahul and Goenka after a match between DC and LSG in IPL 2025 further fueled the speculation about their relationship. Despite Goenka's attempt to congratulate Rahul on his performance, the latter appeared reluctant to engage and quickly walked away. This cold shoulder was caught on camera and went viral.
Despite the controversy and Rahul's departure, it seems Goenka continues to be actively involved with the Lucknow Super Giants. He has been seen engaging in intense chats with the new LSG captain, Rishabh Pant, and encouraging the team.
