The investigation into the death of Raja Raghuvanshi, who was found dead in Meghalaya on June 2, 2025, has taken a shocking turn with revelations about his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi's alleged involvement. According to police reports, Sonam conspired with her alleged lover, Raj Kushwaha, and hired three contract killers to murder her husband during their honeymoon.
A Meghalaya Police officer stated that Sonam Raghuvanshi allegedly offered ₹20 lakh to the contract killers to murder her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi. She also gave ₹15,000 to the killers, allegedly taken directly from Raja's wallet during the crime.
The couple had married on May 11, 2025, and embarked on their honeymoon to Meghalaya shortly after. They were reported missing on May 23, and Raja's body was discovered on June 2 in a gorge near a waterfall in Sohra, East Khasi Hills district. Police believe the murder occurred on May 23, the same day they were reported missing.
The Meghalaya Police arrested Sonam on Tuesday in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, where she had surrendered. Her alleged lover, Raj Kushwaha, and the three suspected contract killers were also apprehended. The accused have been taken to Meghalaya for further investigation.
According to police sources, Sonam was in constant contact with Raj Kushwaha throughout the trip, even when she was with her husband. She allegedly shared their live location with Kushwaha, who then passed it on to the contract killers. The police also claim that Sonam led Raja to a deserted area where the contract killers attacked and murdered him. The weapon used to murder Raja Raghuvanshi was purchased near the Guwahati railway station.
The accused confessed that Sonam was present during the murder and watched as her husband was killed. They revealed that they attacked Raja and subsequently threw his body into a gorge.
Adding to the suspicions, Sonam did not post any pictures of herself with Raja during their honeymoon, which raised red flags for the investigators. A social media post from Raja's account after his murder, which read "Saat janmon ka saath (Together for seven lifetimes)", further implicated Sonam.
CCTV footage also showed Sonam speaking with the three hitmen approximately 10 kilometers from the crime scene. Two days after the murder, Sonam traveled from Shillong to Indore via Siliguri by train. She then met with Raj Kushwaha and stayed in a rented house before eventually surrendering in Ghazipur.
While the Meghalaya Police are confident in their investigation, Sonam's father insists on her innocence, claiming that she has been falsely implicated. Raja's brother has demanded a CBI investigation into the matter, expressing dissatisfaction with the Meghalaya Police's handling of the case.
