Jamie Selway has been appointed as the Director of the Division of Trading and Markets at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), effective June 17, 2025. The announcement, made on June 13, 2025, signals a potential shift in the agency's approach to market regulation, particularly concerning digital assets, as Selway has experience advising cryptocurrency firms.
Selway's appointment comes as SEC Chairman Paul Atkins is adopting a more open stance toward cryptocurrency companies, aiming to foster innovation within the regulatory framework. This move suggests a departure from previous administrations' more stringent regulatory actions in the digital asset space.
Prior to joining the SEC, Selway was a partner at Sophron Advisors, offering counsel on capital markets matters. His career also includes roles as a board member at Protego Holdings and AllofUs Financial, and chairman at Skew, a crypto derivatives company acquired by Coinbase. He has also worked at Goldman Sachs and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA).
Selway's experience extends to the digital asset space, having served as the global head of institutional markets at Blockchain.com. This background makes him a notable choice to lead the Division of Trading and Markets, which oversees major securities market participants, including exchanges, broker-dealers, and self-regulatory organizations. The Division plays a crucial role in maintaining fair, orderly, and efficient markets by establishing and enforcing standards, reviewing proposed rule changes, and assisting in the creation and interpretation of market regulations.
In his statement following the appointment, Selway expressed enthusiasm for the "new day" at the SEC under Chairman Atkins, emphasizing his commitment to promoting the SEC's mission and enabling innovation to benefit investors.
The appointment of Selway follows the departure of Haoxiang Zhu, who left the position in December 2024 to return to education. Since Zhu's departure, David Saltiel has been serving as the Acting Director of the Division.
Alongside Selway, Brian Daly was also appointed as the Director of the Investment Management Division. These appointments signal a broader shift in leadership within the SEC, with Chairman Atkins selecting individuals with extensive industry experience.
