Utah Grizzlies' Future Uncertain: Relocation and Potential Sale Raise Questions About Team's Home Ice.

The Utah Grizzlies, a long-standing ECHL team, have announced they are exploring a potential sale that could lead to the franchise's relocation. The announcement, made on June 22, 2025, has sent ripples through the ECHL world and among the team's dedicated fanbase.

The decision to consider a sale and relocation comes after a period of significant transition for the team's ownership. Following the passing of Dave Elmore in 2023, and with the declining health of his wife and co-owner Donna Tuttle, the Elmore Sports Group has found it increasingly difficult to maintain active involvement in the team's operations. The Elmore Sports Group bought the team after they had been dormant for two years and moved the team to Utah shortly thereafter. Their commitment to the Grizzlies and to community-centered sports has left a lasting mark on Utah's hockey landscape.

"This is an emotional and difficult moment for our family and our organization," the Elmore Sports Group stated. "Utah has been more than a home—it has been part of our identity. But ensuring the Grizzlies have the opportunity to thrive in the future may require new ownership and, potentially, a new home."

The Grizzlies have been a fixture in Utah since the 2005-2006 season, marking the longest the franchise has been in one location. The team plays their home games at the Maverik Center in West Valley City. They are currently affiliated with the Colorado Avalanche and Colorado Eagles. The organization is committed to playing the 2025-2026 season and providing fans with the level of hockey they have come to expect.

While the news of a potential sale and relocation is unsettling, the team has affirmed their commitment to competing in the 2025-2026 season. Players, coaches, and staff are focused on delivering a season that honors the loyalty and support of their fans.

Several factors may have contributed to the difficult decision to consider selling and potentially relocating the team. In May, Kevin Bruder, the General Manager of the Maverik Center and the President and CEO of the Grizzlies, passed away. The Grizzlies have not filled the position since his passing. Additionally, the emergence of the Utah Mammoth (formerly called the Utah Hockey Club), and the state's new NHL team, may have impacted the Grizzlies' attendance and overall viability. During the 2023-24 season, the Grizzlies averaged 6,000 fans, but this past season, with the team finishing 28th in the league, attendance dropped by almost 1,000 fans.

The organization will be in conversation with the ECHL and local leaders over the coming months to determine the best path forward. The team will provide updates as decisions are made. Any sale or relocation would require formal approval from the ECHL and other stakeholders.
