A 19-year-old woman has tragically died after allegedly being pushed from the rooftop of her home in Ashok Nagar, northeast Delhi, by a man believed to be her boyfriend. The incident, which occurred on Monday morning, has sparked outrage and grief, with the victim's family demanding the harshest possible punishment for the accused, including the death penalty.
According to police sources, the victim discovered that the man was planning to marry someone else, which led to a heated argument between the two. The accused, reportedly concealing his identity with a burqa, entered her fifth-floor home posing as a friend before the argument escalated. "Following which he pushed her off the balcony of her home," the source stated. The victim was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries during treatment on Tuesday.
The Jyoti Nagar police station initially registered the case as attempted murder but have since upgraded the charge to murder under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita following the woman's death. Multiple police teams are actively searching for the accused, and CCTV footage from the area is being examined to reconstruct the events and track his movements before and after the crime.
"Search operations are underway. Several police teams have been deployed to trace the accused. We are also checking his possible hideouts in Delhi and adjoining areas. Some important clues have emerged which may help in his early arrest," a police officer told PTI.
The incident has caused significant tension in the Ashok Nagar area, with locals and neighbors gathering outside the victim's residence to mourn her death and call for justice. A strong police presence has been maintained to keep the situation under control. The victim's family is adamant that the accused should face the severest consequences for his actions, claiming the act was intentional and driven by malice. "We want strict punishment," they asserted, emphasizing their demand for capital punishment.
This tragic event is the latest in a series of disturbing crimes against women in Delhi. In January 2025, a 23-year-old woman was murdered by her boyfriend in Bharat Nagar, who attempted to disguise the crime as a suicide. Similarly, in October 2024, a man in Gurgaon was arrested for pushing his wife off a roof and trying to cover it up as an accident. These incidents highlight the ongoing challenges in ensuring the safety and security of women in the region.
The investigation into the Ashok Nagar case is ongoing, with police focusing on apprehending the accused and gathering all necessary evidence to ensure a successful prosecution. The community remains in mourning, united in their demand for justice and a commitment to preventing such tragedies in the future. The case has also reignited the debate around the prevalence of violence against women and the need for stricter laws and more effective enforcement to protect vulnerable individuals.
