Northeast India, a region celebrated for its lush landscapes and vibrant culture, transforms into a verdant paradise during the rainy season. While well-known waterfalls like Nohkalikai and Seven Sisters draw crowds, numerous hidden cascades offer equally stunning, yet more secluded, experiences. These lesser-known gems, often requiring a bit of trekking to reach, become particularly enchanting during the monsoon months, when they swell with rainwater and are framed by mist-shrouded forests.

Meghalaya, the Abode of Clouds: Many of these hidden waterfalls are found in Meghalaya, aptly nicknamed the "abode of clouds," where rainfall is abundant.

  • Wei Sawdong Falls: Located near Cherrapunji, Wei Sawdong Falls is a mesmerizing three-tiered cascade with crystal-clear, bluish-green water. The name "Wei Sawdong" refers to the square-shaped pools formed at its base. A moderately challenging trek through forest paths leads to this hidden gem.

  • Krang Suri Falls: Nestled in the Jaintia Hills, Krang Suri Falls is a serene cascade that flows over a cave amidst dense forests. Its clear blue waters are perfect for swimming, and the site offers boating facilities.

  • Rainbow Falls: Near Nohkalikai Falls, Rainbow Falls is an enchanting cascade accessible by a trek starting from Tyrna village. Sunlight often creates vibrant rainbows in the mist generated by the falls, especially on sunny days.

  • Bishop & Beadon Falls: These falls dramatically tumble into a misty valley framed by lush forest. You can hear them before you see them as a low, constant roar that draws you closer. Accessible yet wild, Bishop & Beadon Falls are perfect if you want a quick dose of Meghalaya's magic without venturing too far from Shillong City.

  • Elephant Falls: While not entirely hidden, Elephant Falls is a three-tiered waterfall close to Shillong that offers a serene escape. The first fall is broad and hidden among trees, the second is smaller, while the third is the tallest and most striking. Though the elephant-shaped rock it was named after is gone, the falls remain a favorite. In Khasi, Elephant Falls is called Kshaid-Lai-Pateng, referring to its three levels.

Other Notable Waterfalls:

  • Langshiang Falls: Situated near Sangriang village in West Khasi Hills, Langshiang Falls is considered one of the highest waterfalls in India. It is a magnificent sight, especially during the monsoon when the Kynshi River is in full flow.

  • Weinia Falls: Easily accessible near Nongstoin, Weinia Falls is a powerful cascade on the Kynshi River, plunging from a significant height into a deep gorge.

  • Seven Sisters Falls (Nohsngithiang Falls): Located near Mawsmai village, this seven-tiered waterfall springs to life during the rainy season, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Locals say it represents the seven states of Northeast India.

Tips for Visiting During the Rainy Season:

Visiting these waterfalls during the rainy season requires some preparation. Be sure to wear appropriate footwear for slippery trails, and carry rain gear to protect yourself and your camera equipment. Check weather conditions before you go, and be prepared for occasional road closures due to heavy rainfall. It is also advisable to hire a local guide who can navigate the trails and share insights about the local flora, fauna, and legends associated with the waterfalls.

Despite the challenges, the reward of witnessing these hidden waterfalls in their full monsoon glory is well worth the effort. The roaring cascades, the vibrant greenery, and the misty ambiance create an unforgettable experience that will leave you in awe of Northeast India's natural beauty.
