Oilers' Goalie Situation: Penguins' Netminder Emerges as a Possible, Though Unconfirmed, Option After Silovs Deal.

Following the Vancouver Canucks' trade of goaltender Arturs Silovs to the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Edmonton Oilers have been mentioned as a potential destination for another Penguins goalie, sparking speculation about changes in Edmonton's netminding situation.

The Oilers' goaltending has been a hot topic after their consecutive Stanley Cup Final appearances. Despite the efforts of Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard, the team is seemingly still searching for a definitive number-one goaltender. Skinner, in particular, has faced scrutiny for not consistently performing at the required level during crucial moments. While Pickard has been a reliable backup, the Oilers may seek a more impactful presence in goal. General Manager Stan Bowman acknowledged the need for adjustment in the goaltending position. Bowman has been proactive, even attempting to acquire Jeremy Swayman from the Boston Bruins in November 2024, but the Bruins declined the offer.

The recent trade of Silovs to Pittsburgh has increased speculation that the Oilers might target Tristan Jarry. Analyst Jeff Marek suggested that the Oilers might consider Jarry, but noted that the Penguins would need to retain a portion of Jarry's $5.375 million average annual salary. With the Penguins seemingly moving towards a younger team direction, and having acquired Silovs, trading Jarry could be a logical step for them.

Jarry's statistics from the previous season include a 3.12 goals-against average (GAA) and an .892 save percentage, which are the lowest of his career. However, his career numbers, excluding last season, show a 2.70 GAA and a .912 save percentage, suggesting that his performance in 2024-25 might be an outlier. Moreover, Jarry has a history of high quality start percentages, which could address the consistency issues that the Oilers have faced with their current goaltenders.

The Oilers have other options within their system. Calvin Pickard's future with the Oilers is uncertain, as he could potentially play in the AHL or with another NHL organization in 2025-26. Matt Tomkins was signed as a veteran AHL goaltender, while Connor Ungar is expected to continue playing in the ECHL.

The Oilers could also explore other trade options or free agency. However, the free agent market appears underwhelming. Names like Thatcher Demko have been mentioned, but his injury history and contract may deter the Oilers.

Ultimately, the Oilers' goaltending situation remains uncertain, and several factors will determine whether they pursue a trade for a goalie like Jarry. These factors include the Penguins' willingness to retain salary, Jarry's performance, and the Oilers' overall strategy for improving their team.
