The Parliament canteen has introduced a new 'Health Menu' for Members of Parliament (MPs), officials, and visitors, blending traditional flavors with a focus on nutrition. This initiative, spearheaded by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, aims to promote healthier lifestyles within the corridors of power by offering a range of millet-based, low-calorie, and nutrient-rich dishes.
The revamped menu features a variety of options, including Ragi Millet Idli, Jowar Upma, Moong Dal Chilla, and grilled fish with vegetables. Millets, which gained prominence during the UN-declared International Year of Millets in 2023, take center stage in this new culinary offering. Traditional Indian staples like 'Chana Chaat' and 'Moong Dal Chilla' are also included.
Each dish is carefully crafted to be low in carbohydrates, sodium, and calories while remaining high in essential nutrients like fiber and protein. Calorie counts are also listed alongside each item. For example, 'Ragi Millet Idli' with 'Sambhar' and 'Chutney' contains 270 kcal, 'Jowar Upma' has 206 kcal, and a sugar-free 'Mix Millet Kheer' contains 161 kcal.
The menu also offers lighter snack options such as 'Barley' and 'Jowar Salad' (294 kcal) and 'Garden Fresh Salad' (113 kcal), along with soups like 'Roast Tomato' and 'Basil Shorba' and 'Vegetable Clear Soup'. Non-vegetarians can choose from lean options like 'Grilled Chicken' with 'Boiled Vegetables' (157 kcal) and 'Grilled Fish' (378 kcal).
The Parliament canteen's initiative reflects a broader effort to support healthy eating habits among lawmakers and officials, who often work long hours during parliamentary sessions. By providing nutritious and delicious alternatives to traditional canteen fare, the 'Health Menu' encourages a balanced diet and overall well-being.
