Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has sparked both admiration and controversy by equating a letter of appreciation from Sonia Gandhi to a Nobel Prize and an Oscar. The letter lauded Reddy's efforts in conducting a comprehensive Backward Classes (BC) caste census in Telangana. Reddy's remarks, made during a presentation on the census to Congress Members of Parliament (MPs) in New Delhi, have drawn sharp reactions, particularly from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Reddy, in his address, emphasized the significance of the BC caste census, describing it as a socio-economic, educational, and political survey. He highlighted the collection of 88 crore pages of self-declared data, asserting its 100% accuracy. He also proposed branding the Telangana caste census and social justice initiatives as the "RaRe" model, potentially an acronym for 'Rahul-Revanth Model'. He stated that February 4, the day the survey commenced last year, would be observed as "Social Justice Day" in Telangana.
The Chief Minister didn't hold back in his criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP, and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), accusing them of opposing the caste census. He alleged that Modi was a "legally converted OBC" and wouldn't act in the best interests of the BCs. He further claimed that the BJP only agreed to include a caste census in the national census due to pressure from the Congress party, particularly Rahul Gandhi.
Reddy also addressed the Congress MPs, urging them to advocate for a 42% reservation for BCs in Telangana across panchayat raj local bodies, government jobs, and educational institutions. He mentioned that the Telangana government had already submitted the proposal for enhanced BC quotas to the central government and the President of India four months prior. Furthermore, he hinted at potentially increasing reservations for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) based on the findings of the socio-economic caste census.
In response to Reddy's statements, reactions have been varied. Within the Congress party, Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi have lauded Reddy's efforts, with Rahul Gandhi stating that Reddy had exceeded expectations and set a milestone for social justice in the country. Priyanka Gandhi expressed pride in Reddy's achievement and his political courage. However, the BJP is expected to criticize Reddy's remarks, particularly his comparison of Sonia Gandhi's letter to a Nobel Prize and an Oscar, viewing it as an exaggeration and an attempt to gain political mileage.
