Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti has recently advocated for the revival of sporting ties between India and Pakistan as a means to normalize relations amidst tense circumstances. She believes that promoting sports can help overcome unemployment and poverty by normalizing the situation between the two nations.
Mufti's statement comes in the wake of recent events, including the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, which have heightened tensions in the region. She expressed concerns about the "war clouds" looming over the region, emphasizing that such an environment is not conducive for a country grappling with unemployment and poverty.
"There should be sporting events (between India and Pakistan) if you want to live in peace and not spend money on the war. If we want to overcome unemployment and poverty, then you have to normalize the situation and sports is the best bet in achieving this goal," the former Chief Minister told reporters.
Mufti has consistently championed dialogue and reconciliation between India and Pakistan. She has stated that Jammu and Kashmir, having borne the brunt of conflicts, desires peace with dignity and will "interfere" in India's foreign policy concerning Pakistan. She has urged the Indian government to cease "ranting" about war and instead pursue a path of dialogue to foster progress and prosperity.
She has also highlighted the need for India to embrace its role as a leader in de-escalating tensions within the subcontinent, advocating for the use of soft power and commitment to peace rather than relying on nuclear weapons.
Mufti has criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for creating an atmosphere of aggression within the country, asserting that opposition parties are compelled to echo similar sentiments for fear of being labeled "anti-national". She also lamented the change in India's foreign policy, arguing that the country has abandoned the SAARC countries while China has been making inroads.
Mehbooba Mufti has, in the past, supported the right of Kashmiris to cheer for whichever team they choose during India-Pakistan cricket matches. She has also expressed her happiness over India's decision to participate in the Asia Cup, emphasizing that sports should be kept separate from politics.
