A man identified as Nizar, a native of Malappuram, died after jumping from the Kochi Metro rail track bridge in Tripunithura on Thursday, August 7, 2025. The incident occurred between the Vadakekkota and SN Junction stations.
According to reports, Nizar arrived at the Vadakekkotta Metro Station and purchased a ticket to the Tripunithura terminal station. After reaching the platform, he trespassed onto the tracks. Metro staff noticed his actions and rushed to stop him. They promptly shut down the power supply in the area and tried to stop him, but Nizar continued walking along the track.
The Kochi Metro police were immediately alerted to the situation. Fire and rescue personnel also arrived at the scene with a safety net in an attempt to prevent him from jumping. Police and fire personnel tried to talk him down, but he jumped from the elevated track onto the main road below.
Nizar sustained critical injuries from the fall. He was initially taken to a private hospital in Tripunithura and then moved to Medical Trust Hospital in Ernakulam, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Following the incident, Metro services were temporarily suspended between Tripunithura and Kadavanthra. After completing an inspection, services have since been restored.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the reasons behind Nizar's actions. The incident was caught on camera, and the footage has been circulating on social media.
This is not the first incident of its kind in the Kochi metropolitan area. In July 2025, an investigation was launched after an elderly man reportedly jumped in front of the Venad Express train from the Thripunithura railway overbridge. In January 2025, a 15-year-old boy died after falling from the 26th floor of an apartment building in Tripunithura. In November 2024, two people died after their bike crashed into a bridge handrail in Tripunithura.
The Kochi Metro is a rapid transit system serving the city of Kochi and the wider Kochi Metropolitan Region. It opened to the public in 2017 and is the first metro system in India that connects rail, road, and water transport facilities.
