Heavy rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir has led to a portion of the Tawi bridge collapsing near Bhagwati Nagar in Jammu. The incident occurred on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, as the Tawi River experienced severe flooding due to continuous rains.
The collapse, specifically affecting bridge number four of five on the river, resulted in several vehicles becoming trapped. Authorities had previously suspended heavy traffic on the bridge but smaller vehicles were still permitted. Emergency teams are on site, working to rescue those trapped and manage the traffic disruption.
The incessant rainfall has triggered widespread chaos across the Union Territory, causing landslides and flash floods. Doda district has been particularly hard-hit, with flash floods and cloudbursts damaging numerous homes and infrastructure. Tragically, three people have been reported dead in Doda due to the flooding.
The Chenab River's water level is dangerously high, nearing the highest flood level recorded. SDRF teams have been deployed, and residents near the riverbanks are urged to stay alert and remain indoors.
The disruption caused by the heavy rains and bridge collapse has also impacted rail services, leading to the cancellation of over 10 passenger train services as a precautionary measure. Furthermore, the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway is blocked due to landslides. Schools across the Jammu division have been closed.
The Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has urged people to move away from regions close to the riverbanks. Emergency helplines have been activated to assist those affected. The General Manager of Northern Railway and the Divisional Railway Manager of Jammu are monitoring the situation from Pathankot with their technical teams.
