Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has voiced his concerns regarding the current state of India-US relations, urging the central government to take proactive measures to strengthen ties with the United States. He emphasized the importance of this relationship, citing the US's dominance in wealth creation and global innovation.
Yadav's statement comes in response to the recent imposition of a 50% import tariff on Indian goods by the United States, coupled with warnings of further punitive measures due to India's continued purchase of Russian oil. He cautioned that deteriorating relations with the US could have significant repercussions for India, particularly for the economy, youth, and farmers.
Yadav highlighted the significant number of Indian students, approximately 8 lakh annually, who pursue education in the United States, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a conducive environment for their academic pursuits. He stressed that steps should be taken to improve ties with the United States, as wealth is created there and India has huge trade with US.
Yadav has been critical of the central government's foreign policy, particularly its handling of relations with the United States. He argued that the current approach jeopardizes millions of livelihoods in Uttar Pradesh, where exporters are facing near-collapse due to the imposed tariffs. He has called for immediate government intervention to provide a "safety shield" to exporters, especially those engaged in the One District One Product scheme, and to prevent mass unemployment and safeguard industries like textiles, brassware, and handicrafts.
In early September, Yadav also taunted Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his silence regarding statements made by Donald Trump's advisor, Peter Navarro, concerning India's role in the Russia-Ukraine war and alleged profiteering by "Brahmins". Yadav expressed his disapproval of "taunts of those with whom we claim to have friendly relations," and criticized what he sees as interference in India's politics and social fabric.
Yadav's concerns reflect a broader debate about the trajectory of India-US relations. While the two countries have historically enjoyed a strong partnership, recent trade disputes and differing geopolitical stances have introduced complexities. Some analysts believe that India's independent foreign policy, particularly its continued engagement with Russia, has strained relations with the US. Others argue that the US is using tariffs as a tool to pressure India on trade and other issues.
