In the 125th episode of his monthly radio program "Mann Ki Baat," Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the crucial role of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in liberating Hyderabad from the Nizam's rule. He recalled the sacrifices made by those who fought for the region's freedom and emphasized the significance of celebrating Hyderabad Liberation Day in September.
Modi noted that even after India gained independence in August 1947, the people of Hyderabad continued to suffer under the oppressive rule of the Nizam and his Razakars, a private militia. These forces unleashed atrocities on the population, even killing those who dared to hoist the Indian flag or chant "Vande Mataram". Women and the marginalized sections of society faced unspeakable injustices.
The Prime Minister shared his sorrow over the tragic loss of life during that period, emphasizing the bravery of those who stood up against tyranny. He also mentioned that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar had warned the Union government about the escalating crisis in Hyderabad.
Recognizing the dire situation, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel took decisive action. He convinced the government to launch "Operation Polo," a military operation that successfully integrated Hyderabad into the Indian Union in record time. Modi highlighted that the entire nation celebrated this victory, uniting citizens in their pride and joy.
To commemorate this pivotal moment in history, Modi played a recording of Sardar Patel's speech from that era during his radio program. Furthermore, the central government has declared that September 17 will be officially observed as "Hyderabad Liberation Day" every year, honoring the legacy of those who fought for freedom and justice.
Sardar Patel's decisive action was crucial in preventing Hyderabad from becoming "a cancer in the belly of India". The Nizam of Hyderabad had hoped to maintain the state's independence, even seeking dominion status. However, Patel recognized the dangers of having a hostile entity in the middle of the country, which could have led to endless conflict and instability.
"Operation Polo" was launched on September 13, 1948, and lasted for 109 hours. The Indian Army's swift advance and capture of key positions overwhelmed the Nizam's forces, leading to their surrender on September 17, 1948. The operation resulted in casualties on both sides, but it ultimately secured Hyderabad's integration into India.
Sardar Patel's leadership and determination were instrumental in uniting India and ensuring its stability in the aftermath of independence. His role in the liberation of Hyderabad is a testament to his vision and commitment to the nation's integrity.
In addition to recalling Sardar Patel's contribution, Modi also used the "Mann Ki Baat" platform to address other important issues. He expressed grief over the devastation caused by recent floods and landslides in several states and praised the efforts of rescue teams and local communities. He also urged citizens to celebrate upcoming festivals with "Swadeshi" pride, promoting local products and self-reliance.
