The government is planning to introduce skill-based learning in the Class 11 and 12 curriculum, according to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. This initiative aligns with the recommendations of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and aims to make students more competent and employable. Pradhan announced this at an event at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras. The ministry is also working to introduce skill-based learning from Class 6 onwards, integrating it formally into the curriculum.

Pradhan emphasized the need for a paradigm shift in the learning methodology. He pointed out that the traditional education system has been largely focused on degrees and certifications. However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has rightly stated that while degrees and certifications are important, it is equally crucial to make students competent. Skill-based education, a primary recommendation of NEP 2020, addresses this need.

At the secondary level (Classes 9 and 10), there are 19 skill subjects, while at the senior secondary level (Classes 11 and 12), there are 39. These subjects cover diverse fields such as:
