The state of Punjab is facing a severe crisis due to unprecedented flooding, with the death toll reaching at least 30. Relentless rains and overflowing rivers have submerged villages, towns, and farmlands, impacting the lives of over 2.56 lakh people across 12 districts. The Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers are at critical flood levels, causing widespread devastation.

Government Response and Relief Efforts

The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, is working to provide continuous relief to those affected by the floods. CM Mann has toured the flood-hit areas, including Ferozepur, to assess the damage and listen to the grievances of the people. He has also met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the situation and seek central support.

Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria is also visiting the flood-affected districts to take stock of the situation and ensure timely assistance. He has directed officials to coordinate effectively and provide the necessary relief and rehabilitation measures.

The government has evacuated over 15,000 people from the flood-hit areas and set up 129 relief centers to provide shelter and assistance. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Army, and local teams are conducting rescue operations.

Over 2.3 lakh acres of agricultural land have been inundated, threatening the vital paddy crop season and raising concerns about food security. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has urged the central government to increase compensation for the losses caused by the floods. He has pointed out that the existing norms for compensation are inadequate, given the exorbitant rise in the prices of agricultural inputs. Mann has also requested an increase in the ex-gratia payment for the families of deceased persons.

Role of Climate Change and Man-Made Factors

Experts believe that climate change and man-made factors have worsened the flood situation in Punjab. Erratic rainfall patterns and the failure to desilt rivers have reduced their water-carrying capacity, contributing to the severity of the floods.

Non-Governmental Organizations and Community Support

Several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are also actively involved in providing relief and support to the flood-affected communities. These organizations are distributing food, clean drinking water, medical supplies, and other essential items. Some are also providing fodder for animals and helping farmers restore their fields. Punjabi singer and actor, Diljit Dosanjh, through his Saanjh Foundation, has adopted 10 villages in Gurdaspur and Amritsar, providing essential supplies and planning long-term rehabilitation. The Kalgidhar Trust, Baru Sahib, has rescued over 5000 individuals from 125 villages. Khalsa Aid is also conducting large-scale relief operations in affected districts.
