Patrick Hemingway, the last surviving child of the celebrated author Ernest Hemingway, passed away on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at the age of 97. He died at his home in Bozeman, Montana. His grandson, Patrick Hemingway Adams, confirmed the death.

Born on June 28, 1928, in Kansas City, Missouri, Patrick Miller Hemingway was the second son of Ernest Hemingway and the first child of Hemingway's second wife, Pauline Pfeiffer. Growing up, Patrick spent his childhood traveling with his parents, living in various locations from Cuba and Spain to Wyoming and Key West, Florida.

Patrick attended Harvard University, graduating in 1950 with a degree in History and Literature. Inspired by his father's adventurous spirit and the displays he saw, Patrick developed a fascination with East Africa, which he considered a "promised land". After graduation, he used his inheritance to buy a 2,300-acre farm near Dar-es-Salaam in Tanganyika (now Tanzania) and moved to Africa, where he lived for 25 years.

During his time in Africa, Patrick Hemingway pursued a career as a professional big-game hunter and safari guide. He established his own safari business, Tanganyika Safari Business, near Mount Kilimanjaro in 1955. He also served as an honorary game warden in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. In the 1960s, he was appointed by the United Nations to teach conservation and wildlife at the Wildlife Management College in Tanzania. He served as a forestry officer in the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the UN.

After leaving Africa in the mid-1970s, Patrick Hemingway relocated to Bozeman, Montana, where he lived from 1975 until his death. There, he managed the intellectual property of his father's estate, overseeing projects in publishing, electronic media, and movies.

One of Patrick Hemingway's most notable achievements was editing his father's unpublished novel about a 1950s safari to Africa, which he published in 1999 under the title "True at First Light". The book was a blend of fact and fiction from Ernest Hemingway's East Africa expedition with his fourth wife, Mary, and it was derived from 800 pages of manuscript.

Patrick Hemingway was married twice. His first wife, Henrietta Broyles, passed away in 1963. They had a daughter, Mina Hemingway. His second wife, Carol Thompson, died in 2023.

Patrick Hemingway is remembered as a man who lived a full and adventurous life, inspired by his father's legacy and dedicated to preserving it for future generations.
