Nazneen, a prominent actress from the 1970s and 80s, is best remembered for her role as Kunti in B.R. Chopra's Mahabharat. Born in Kolkata in 1958, she later moved to Mumbai with her family and attended Hill Grange High School, where actress Neetu Singh was her classmate.
Nazneen began her film career with Sare Gama Pa in 1972. Despite early recognition for playing Jaya Bachchan's sister in Kora Kagaz (1974), she often received offers for similar supporting roles. Although she worked in successful films like Chalte Chalte (1976) and Dildaar (1977), Nazneen yearned for lead roles.
At a critical juncture in her career, Nazneen chose to gamble by declining sister roles, as she was already playing lead roles in B-grade movies. The producers of those films warned her that accepting sister roles would negatively impact their box office performance. This decision, while intended to give her leading roles, may have inadvertently led to a decline in her mainstream career.
Later in her career, Nazneen transitioned to television and played Kunti in Mahabharat in 1988. Despite the role's popularity, she disappeared from the film industry after the show. Information regarding her current whereabouts or activities remains scarce, and she now lives away from the world of glitz and glamour.
Another actress, Shafaq Naaz, also played Kunti in the 2013 Mahabharat series. She gained significant recognition for her portrayal. However, she faced criticism and trolling on social media for wearing Western outfits, with some fans claiming it didn't suit her image as Kunti. Shafaq Naaz defended her choices, asserting her right to personal expression and emphasizing that her role was a character she played. She expressed disappointment that people couldn't separate her reel and real identities. Despite the negativity, she stated that she did not regret playing Kunti and would do it again if offered the role.
