New Delhi has voiced its deep concern regarding the recent escalation of tensions in the Middle East, following Israeli strikes on Hamas targets in Doha, Qatar. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) released a statement expressing apprehension about the deteriorating security situation in the region and strongly urged restraint and diplomacy to prevent further endangerment of peace and security.

The strikes, which occurred earlier today, involved a series of explosions that rocked Doha, with witnesses reporting plumes of smoke over the Katara district. Qatari authorities have condemned the strikes as a "cowardly assault" on residential buildings housing Hamas leaders, warning of a dangerous escalation. In response, Qatar's foreign ministry spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, stated that Qatar would not tolerate what it considers reckless Israeli behavior and a violation of its sovereignty.

While Qatar has long served as a mediator between Israel and Hamas, tensions have risen following the strikes. According to reports, the Israeli military has confirmed the air strikes, stating that the operation targeted senior leaders of Hamas. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office claimed the attack as a "wholly independent" operation, initiated and conducted by Israel, taking full responsibility. Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana posted on X, "This is a message to the entire Middle East".

A Hamas official told Al Jazeera that the Israeli strikes killed six people, including a Qatari security officer. The US Embassy in Doha issued a shelter-in-place order for its staff and advised American citizens to remain indoors amidst reports of missile strikes.

India's call for restraint reflects its consistent stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict. India has condemned terrorism in the strongest terms and stood with Israel following the October 7 terror attacks. At the same time, India has also called on Israel to exercise restraint, emphasizing dialogue and diplomacy. India has not designated Hamas as a terror group.

India has traditionally aligned with the Global South in its support for the Palestinian cause and has consistently advocated for a two-state solution, with a sovereign Palestinian state existing peacefully alongside Israel. India has also provided humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people.

India's External Affairs Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, has stated that India stands firmly with Israel against terrorism and with the Palestinians in supporting a two-state solution. This position underscores India's commitment to maintaining a balanced approach, condemning violence while supporting a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

The situation remains highly volatile, and the international community is watching closely. India's appeal for restraint and diplomacy highlights the urgent need for de-escalation and a peaceful resolution to prevent further instability in the region.
