Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to host his Mauritian counterpart, Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, in Varanasi on September 11, 2025, as part of Ramgoolam's state visit to India from September 9 to 16. The meeting in Varanasi, Modi's parliamentary constituency, highlights the deep-rooted connections, spiritual bonds, and people-to-people ties that have long characterized the relationship between India and Mauritius.

Ramgoolam arrived in Mumbai on September 9 to begin his eight-day state visit. This visit marks his first overseas bilateral trip in his current term. He will also visit Ayodhya and Tirupati during his stay in India.

The meeting between the two Prime Ministers in Varanasi is scheduled for approximately 11:30 AM. Discussions will focus on the full spectrum of cooperation between the two nations, with particular emphasis on development partnerships and capacity building. Both leaders are expected to explore opportunities for expanding collaboration in various sectors, including health, education, science and technology, energy, and infrastructure. Emerging domains such as renewable energy, digital public infrastructure, and the blue economy will also be on the agenda.

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) emphasized that the deepening cooperation between India and Mauritius is significant not only for the prosperity of both nations but also for the collective aspirations of the Global South. The Varanasi summit is expected to be a milestone in the shared journey towards mutual prosperity, sustainable development, and a secure and inclusive future.

Preparations are underway in Varanasi to welcome the Mauritian Prime Minister. The city is being decorated to showcase its cultural heritage. Cultural performances and floral arrangements are planned to greet Ramgoolam upon his arrival.

The visit builds upon the momentum from Modi's state visit to Mauritius in March 2025, during which the two countries elevated their relationship to an "Enhanced Strategic Partnership". Mauritius is considered a key maritime neighbor in the Indian Ocean Region and holds a special place in India's "Neighbourhood First" policy and its Vision MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Region).

Following his engagements in Varanasi, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to travel to Dehradun to conduct an aerial survey of flood-affected regions in Uttarakhand and chair a high-level review meeting with officials.

The Mauritian Prime Minister is expected to visit the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Baba Kalbhairav, as well as cultural sites such as Sarnath and the BHU Bharat Kala Bhavan. He may also participate in the Ganga Aarti ceremony. Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will host a dinner in honor of the visiting Prime Minister.

This visit marks the first time a Mauritian Prime Minister will hold a bilateral meeting in Varanasi. Discussions are expected to cover cooperation in industrial development, technological innovation, and tourism.
