Jaishankar in New York: Appeals for Global Peace and the Cessation of International Conflicts.

In New York, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar made a strong appeal for peace, conflict resolution, and a united front against terrorism while addressing a meeting of G20 foreign ministers on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (UNGA). He stressed the critical link between international peace and global development, noting their concurrent deterioration and the disproportionate impact on the Global South.

Jaishankar called out "double standards" in the international community's approach to conflicts. He argued that actions that undermine development cannot promote peace, emphasizing the need for dialogue and diplomacy. He pointed out that making essential resources like energy more uncertain in an already fragile economic environment only exacerbates divisions.

The minister highlighted the disproportionate burden borne by the Global South due to ongoing conflicts, particularly in Ukraine and Gaza. These conflicts have jeopardized supplies and logistics, leading to increased costs and pressure on nations concerning food, fuel, and fertilizer security.

Jaishankar underscored the necessity for global unity in combating terrorism, asserting that there should be neither tolerance nor accommodation for terrorist activities. He emphasized that those who actively counter terrorism on any front are providing a significant service to the entire international community.

Furthermore, Jaishankar pointed out the limitations of existing multilateral frameworks, particularly the United Nations, in addressing conflict, economic pressures, and terrorism. He stressed the urgent need for reforms in multilateralism to address these shortcomings. He urged G20 members to take greater responsibility in strengthening global stability and providing a more positive direction through dialogue, diplomacy, and a firm stance against terrorism.

Amidst global turbulence, Jaishankar suggested leveraging countries capable of engaging with all parties in conflict to achieve and sustain peace. He signaled India's willingness to play a more active role in helping the international community resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Jaishankar's remarks came against the backdrop of increasing strain in relations between New Delhi and Washington, D.C., following the imposition of a 50% tariff on India's exports to the US by President Trump. This tariff included a 25% additional tax intended to discourage India from purchasing oil from Russia.
