A high-level committee, led by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has approved disaster mitigation and recovery projects totaling ₹4,545 crore for nine states. The approved projects aim to bolster these states' capabilities in tackling various natural disasters, from floods to wetland restoration.

The states that will benefit from this financial assistance are Assam, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Andhra Pradesh. The approved funds will be allocated towards specific projects designed to mitigate the impact of disasters and enhance resilience in these regions.

Assam will receive a significant portion of the funds, with ₹692 crore allocated for the restoration and rejuvenation of wetlands. Out of this, the central government will contribute ₹519 crore, while the state will provide ₹173 crore. This project aims to enhance wetland capacity, create flood storage, increase flood resilience, protect the aquatic environment, and aid economic growth. The project will focus on restoring and rejuvenating 24 wetlands in nine districts of Assam, located within the Brahmaputra river system. The long-term goal is to establish a flood-proof Brahmaputra valley, with this project serving as a pilot.

Furthermore, the high-level committee has greenlit the second phase of the urban flood risk management program, which will cover 11 cities: Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, Jaipur, Kanpur, Patna, Raipur, Thiruvananthapuram, Visakhapatnam, Indore, and Lucknow. This initiative has a total outlay of ₹2,444 crore and will be funded from the National Disaster Mitigation Fund.
