Shubman Gill clarifies captaincy dynamics with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, emphasizing unchanged team environment.

Shubman Gill, the newly appointed ODI captain for India, has addressed speculations surrounding his relationship with senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, dismissing any notions of a rift or altered dynamics within the team. Speaking on the eve of the first ODI against Australia in Perth, Gill emphasized that the bond he shares with the two veterans remains as strong as ever, despite the change in leadership.

"I think the narrative outside is different, but among us, nothing has changed," Gill stated. He highlighted the invaluable experience Sharma and Kohli bring to the team and how he actively seeks their guidance. "Everything is the same as it was before, and that is very helpful".

Gill further elaborated on how he approaches Sharma and Kohli for advice, valuing their insights on various aspects of the game. "Whatever they feel—their experience, whatever they have learned, whether by reading the pitch or any situation—I go to them and ask what they think, how they would do it if they were in my place". He emphasized that he considers their perspectives alongside his own understanding before making decisions on the field.

"I have a very good relationship with both Virat Bhai and Rohit Bhai," Gill affirmed. He reiterated that whenever he has doubts, he turns to them for suggestions and advice, and they are always willing to assist him. "See, I think that's the real wealth of experience," he added.

Prior to the ODI series, Gill was observed engaging in discussions with Kohli and Sharma during practice sessions. He was seen receiving batting tips from Kohli and having a long conversation with Sharma. Gill sought Kohli's advice after playing certain shots during a practice session at Perth's Optus Stadium.

Gill acknowledged the honor of leading players he grew up idolizing. The ODI series against Australia marks the first time Sharma and Kohli will play under Gill's captaincy, presenting a unique dynamic. It also marks their return to the national side since the conclusion of the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year. These upcoming ODIs in Australia might be the last international games for the veterans on Australian soil.
