Kolkata, November 12, 2025 – West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been conferred with a Doctor of Letters (D'Lit) degree by Okayama University of Japan. The honorary degree recognizes Banerjee's significant contributions to social development, women's empowerment, culture, and humanitarian efforts. The conferment ceremony took place today in Kolkata at the Dhan Dhanya Auditorium in Alipore.
A delegation from Okayama University arrived in Kolkata to personally present the honor to the Chief Minister. The university president highlighted the historical significance of the award and expressed keen interest in strengthening ties with universities in West Bengal, emphasizing cultural and educational collaborations. This marks the first time Banerjee has received such an honor from a foreign university.
The event was attended by a distinguished gathering of vice-chancellors, senior academicians, artists, and other dignitaries. Sources indicate that the conferment ceremony generated considerable excitement within administrative and cultural circles, underscoring the growing cooperation between academic institutions in West Bengal and their Japanese counterparts.
Mamata Banerjee has previously received honorary D.Litt degrees from three prestigious Indian universities. These include the University of Calcutta in 2018, St. Xavier's University in 2023, and the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar.
The recognition from Okayama University is viewed not only as an acknowledgement of Banerjee's political leadership but also as a testament to her consistent efforts in promoting education, women's empowerment, and cultural values within West Bengal. Discussions are underway between the Japanese delegation and the state government to explore expanded cultural exchanges, collaborative research in education, and enhanced commercial ties.
Banerjee, who is also the leader of the Trinamool Congress, has often been described as a leader with deep literary and cultural inclinations. The honorary D.Litt from Okayama University adds another feather to her cap, further solidifying her image as a stateswoman with a focus on holistic development and international collaboration.
