Thomas Tuchel is laser-focused on maintaining England's competitive edge as they prepare to face Albania in their final World Cup qualifier. The Three Lions, already assured of their place at the 2026 World Cup, travel to Tirana to conclude their Group K campaign against a side also guaranteed to finish second.
Tuchel, who took over from Gareth Southgate in January, has emphasized the importance of maintaining hunger and focus within the squad, rather than dwelling on potential records. England has enjoyed a near-perfect qualifying run, winning all seven of their matches without conceding a single goal. A win against Albania would make them the first European team to win at least six World Cup qualifiers without conceding.
"We didn't speak a single word about that,” Tuchel said at Air Albania Stadium, referring to the record. "We made sure yesterday that we had yesterday the training session that we had. The quality and the mentality of the guys that didn't play was on the highest level, which was a pure pleasure". He highlighted the team's dedication and competitive spirit, noting that every player is eager to contribute. "Everyone is ready to play, everyone is ready to start. Competition is still on, the hunger is still on to be on the pitch tomorrow. That is the most important".
England is expected to win against Albania. However, Tuchel is not taking anything for granted. He reiterated the importance of focusing on the process and the factors within their control. "Everything we talk about is about the process and the things we can influence. We need to get the foundation right to have a chance to get these records," he stated.
Team news sees some changes for England. Ezri Konsa is out of the match due to a calf injury sustained after playing the full 90 minutes against Serbia. Marc Guehi has also withdrawn from the squad due to a foot injury. Bukayo Saka, who appeared to be moving gingerly during the Serbia game, has allayed fears of any injury and trained on Saturday. Harry Kane indicated he is set to start again. Tuchel may use the game as an opportunity to experiment with the lineup, with Jude Bellingham potentially returning to the starting XI.
Albania secured their spot in the playoffs with a 1-0 victory over Andorra. Despite having their qualification fate sealed, they will be looking to put up a strong performance against England. Albania manager Sylvinho jokingly called England's impressive defensive record "disgusting".
The match is scheduled for a 5pm GMT kick-off on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at the Arena Kombetare in Tirana. It will be broadcast live on ITV1 in the UK, with coverage beginning at 4pm GMT.
Tuchel's focus remains on building a solid foundation and fostering a relentless desire to compete as England looks to the future and the challenges of the 2026 World Cup.
