Hong Kong tennis star Coleman Wong Chak-lam has advanced to the semi-finals of the men's singles competition at the National Games. The 21-year-old Hongkonger achieved this feat on Tuesday, continuing his strong performance at the tournament.
Wong secured his place in the semi-finals by defeating Cui Jie of Beijing in straight sets. Wong, currently ranked 143rd in the world, entered the match as the favorite, with Cui Jie holding a career-high singles ranking of 280.
Earlier in the tournament, Wong demonstrated his skills and stamina by competing in multiple events. In the third round of singles, he faced a player from Guangdong, dominating the first set 6-2 in just 36 minutes. The second set proved more challenging, but Wong secured a crucial break in the ninth game to win 6-4 after an hour and 17 minutes. Prior to that, Wong advanced to the third round by defeating Hubei's Chen Ye in straight sets. The No. 2 seed delivered an impressive performance, serving nine aces and winning 79 percent of his first-serve points. He broke Chen's serve to clinch the first set 6-4 and continued his momentum in the second set, winning 6-3.
After his singles victory in the third round, Wong teamed up with Kevin Wong Chun-hun to compete in the men's doubles quarter-finals against Tang Sheng and Sun Qian of Jiangsu. However, their run ended there, as they lost 6-4, 6-2.
Wong's success at the National Games follows a strong performance in Taipei, where he reached the semi-finals of the ATP Challenger Tour. He defeated France's Maxime Janvier in the quarter-finals with a 6-4, 6-4 victory, showcasing his dominance on serve.
The National Games, currently unfolding in Guangzhou, are nearing their conclusion. With Wong close to clinching a medal, the focus now shifts to his semi-final match.
