Petrol, Diesel Prices Today: Mixed Bag for Consumers on November 24

New Delhi, November 24, 2025 – Fuel prices across India present a mixed scenario for consumers today. While gasoline prices are seeing a slight decrease, diesel prices are heading upward. These revisions, influenced by international crude oil rates, the rupee-dollar exchange rate, and other market dynamics, went into effect at 6:00 AM today.

The Latest Price Adjustments

Across the country, consumers can expect to see the following changes at the pump:

  • Petrol: Prices have decreased by ₹0.20 per liter. This rollback comes after six consecutive weeks of increases, providing some relief to petrol vehicle owners.
  • Diesel: Prices have increased by ₹0.60 per liter. This marks the fourth straight week of rising diesel costs, impacting transportation and potentially overall inflation.
  • Kerosene: Prices have increased by ₹1.30 per liter.

These changes have been implemented by major fuel retailers, including Shell Pilipinas and Cleanfuel. Cleanfuel adjusted prices at 4:01 PM, while other firms implemented the changes earlier in the day.

Factors Influencing the Price Changes

The mixed price movements are attributed to a combination of factors impacting the global oil market. Higher US reserves have contributed to the gasoline price decrease. However, concerns over Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil installations and sanctions risks involving Russia, Iran, and Venezuela have put upward pressure on diesel prices. The United States (US) sanctions on Russian firms Lukoil and Rosneft, which took effect on Nov. 21, aimed to convince their country to enter peace talks with Ukraine.

Despite the sanctions, Russia maintains that its oil production remains unaffected and expects to meet its OPEC+ production quota by the end of the year or early next year. Russia's quota for November is roughly 9.5 million barrels per day.

Maintenance season, with several refineries undergoing shutdowns and planned works, has also reduced outflows from northeast Asia, while China continues to limit its exports.

Regional Price Variations

Fuel prices vary across different cities due to factors such as local taxes and transportation costs. For example, in Chennai, one liter of petrol costs ₹100.80, and a liter of diesel costs ₹92.39. To find the specific prices in your city, you can check the websites or mobile apps of fuel retailers like Indian Oil. Indian Oil also provides the option to check prices via SMS.

Impact on Consumers and Economy

The increase in diesel prices is likely to have a cascading effect on the economy, potentially leading to higher transportation costs for goods and services. This, in turn, could contribute to inflationary pressures. While the decrease in petrol prices offers some relief to individual vehicle owners, the overall impact of rising diesel costs may outweigh these benefits.

Long-Term Trends

The cost of fuel is composed of wholesale petrol prices, retailer margins, fuel duty, and VAT. Fuel duty has been frozen at a rate of 57.95p per liter but was cut to 52.95p in 2022 in response to rising fuel prices after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In the Budget on October 30, 2024, it was confirmed the 52.95p rate would remain in place from Spring 2025.
