‘Let me be clear…’: Indian envoy exposes Pakistan at UN with a warning
United Nations, New York: India has delivered a strong rebuke to Pakistan at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), firmly rejecting Islamabad's claims regarding Jammu and Kashmir and highlighting Pakistan's support for terrorism. During an open debate on "Leadership for Peace" on Monday, India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni, labeled Pakistan as the "global epicentre of terror" and accused it of having an "obsessive focus on harming India and its people".
Ambassador Parvathaneni's remarks came in response to comments made by Pakistan's representative, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, who reiterated Islamabad's stance that Jammu and Kashmir remains an "unresolved dispute". The Indian envoy asserted that the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are an integral and inalienable part of India, and "were, are, and will always remain so".
Highlighting Pakistan's long history of sponsoring terrorism, Ambassador Parvathaneni defended India's decision to hold the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance until Pakistan credibly and irreversibly ends its support for cross-border terrorism and all other forms of terrorism. He cited the April 2025 terror attack in Pahalgam, where 26 civilians were killed in a targeted attack based on religion, as a clear example of Pakistan's continued involvement in supporting terrorism. He stated that India entered into the Indus Waters Treaty 65 years ago in good faith, but Pakistan has repeatedly violated the spirit of the treaty by inflicting three wars and thousands of terror attacks on India.
Beyond the issue of terrorism, Ambassador Parvathaneni also addressed Pakistan's internal political situation, criticizing the imprisonment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, the banning of his political party, and the passage of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, which grants lifetime immunity to the Chief of Defence Forces. He described these actions as a "constitutional coup" engineered by the armed forces, demonstrating a "unique way of respecting the will of its people". The 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill encompasses 59 clauses that overhaul Pakistan's military and judicial frameworks. A key provision elevates the Chief of Army Staff to Chief of Defence Forces, with honorary ranks designated as lifetime titles. The amendment also establishes a Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) to share authority with the Supreme Court, particularly on constitutional issues.
India's strong stance at the UNSC underscores the escalating tensions between the two countries and New Delhi's commitment to exposing Pakistan's vulnerabilities on the global stage. Ambassador Parvathaneni asserted that Pakistan's pursuit of a divisive agenda undermines its international responsibilities as a non-permanent member of the UNSC. He also stated that a serving non-permanent Security Council Member that chooses to further this obsession in all meetings and platforms of the UN in pursuit of its divisive agenda cannot be expected to fulfil its designated responsibilities and obligations.
The Indian envoy's assertive remarks reflect India's broader diplomatic strategy of highlighting Pakistan's support for terrorism and internal political issues while firmly defending its territorial integrity.
