Mira Nair, the acclaimed director known for her culturally rich and universally resonant films like "Monsoon Wedding," recently revealed a fascinating casting tidbit regarding her 2020 Netflix series, "A Suitable Boy". In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Nair shared that her son, Zohran Mamdani, now the mayor of New York City, was her initial choice for the role of Maan Kapoor, which was eventually portrayed by Ishaan Khatter.
Nair explained that she offered Mamdani the main role in "A Suitable Boy," but he declined. According to Nair, Mamdani stated that many people would "die to be offered these things, but I don't". She described him as "the most reluctant actor" who never desired the role. Despite his reluctance towards acting, Mamdani had previously contributed to Nair's work, participating in workshops for the musical adaptation of "Monsoon Wedding" and even playing the character PK Dubey. Nair recalled a particular workshop where Mamdani's performance impressed a potential investor, who insisted on his inclusion if the show went to Broadway.
Nair expressed gratitude that Mamdani never needed to pursue acting, despite recognizing his charisma and ability to connect with people. While she never managed to get him fully involved in a film, he did have a brief appearance in "Queen of Katwe".
"A Suitable Boy," adapted from Vikram Seth's novel, is set in post-independence India and follows four interconnected families. The story centers on Mrs. Rupa Mehra's quest to find a suitable husband for her daughter, Lata, while exploring themes of family, love, and societal change. Ishaan Khatter, who ultimately played Maan Kapoor, delivered a performance that was praised by critics. Khatter himself said he felt honored to be working on the series alongside such distinguished artists and technicians.
The series also stars Tanya Maniktala as Lata, along with Tabu, Rasika Dugal and other prominent actors. "A Suitable Boy" was noted as the first BBC period drama with a predominantly non-white cast.
Mira Nair's revelation about Zohran Mamdani's near-casting offers a glimpse into the creative process behind "A Suitable Boy" and highlights the diverse talents within her family. While Mamdani chose a different path, his early involvement in Nair's projects suggests a continued connection to the world of film and arts.
