Amman, Jordan – India and Jordan have strongly condemned terrorism in all its forms, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening cooperation in combating this global threat. The condemnation came during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Jordan on Monday, marking the first full-fledged bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 37 years, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Prime Minister Modi lauded Jordan and King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein's strong stance against terrorism, extremism, and radicalization, emphasizing that both Amman and New Delhi share a common and clear position against terrorism. He praised King Abdullah's efforts in promoting moderation, highlighting his role as a voice of reason in the Islamic world. Modi recalled his first meeting with King Abdullah in 2015 at the United Nations, where they discussed countering violent extremism.
King Abdullah conveyed strong support for India's fight against terrorism and condemned all forms of terror. He also expressed solidarity with India following the Pahalgam attack, reiterating Jordan's rejection of terrorism in all its manifestations and support for global efforts to combat extremism.
During the visit, both leaders engaged in discussions at Al Husseiniya Palace, focusing on strengthening cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, defense, and security. They also addressed regional and global issues, including the situation in Gaza, emphasizing the importance of restoring peace and stability in the region.
In addition to counter-terrorism efforts, India and Jordan are also set to boost economic ties. Prime Minister Modi proposed doubling bilateral trade to USD 5 billion over the next five years. Jordan is a key supplier of fertilizers to India, and both countries are exploring further investments in Jordan to meet India's growing demand for phosphatic fertilizer.
Several agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were finalized during the visit, covering renewable energy, water management, digital public infrastructure, and culture. A twinning arrangement between Petra and Ellora was also established.
The visit signifies a renewed commitment to strengthening the relationship between India and Jordan. Prime Minister Modi extended an invitation to King Abdullah to visit India, which was accepted. The discussions and agreements made during this visit are expected to pave the way for deeper cooperation and partnership between the two countries in the years to come.
