Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Assam included a significant interaction with state BJP leaders, emphasizing the importance of public responsibility that extends beyond mere electoral calculations. The meeting, held at the BJP headquarters in Guwahati, focused on strengthening the party's organizational base and assessing public perception of the government in advance of the upcoming Assembly elections.
Modi's visit to the Assam BJP headquarters, Vajpayee Bhawan, marked the first time a sitting Prime Minister has visited the state party headquarters. Approximately 280 BJP leaders, including former state presidents, current and former MPs, ministers, and MLAs, participated in the closed-door meeting. The Prime Minister engaged with the leaders on various topics, ranging from election preparations to the overall functioning of the party. Modi also sought feedback from the state leadership on the government's performance and how it is perceived by the public.
During the interaction, Modi emphasized that the party's responsibility to the public goes beyond winning elections. He urged the leaders to focus on serving the people and addressing their concerns, reinforcing the idea that true leadership involves a commitment to public welfare. The Prime Minister's approach was informal, creating an atmosphere where leaders felt comfortable sharing their thoughts and perspectives.
Prior to the meeting, Modi inaugurated the new terminal building at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati and unveiled an 80-foot statue of Assam's first Chief Minister, Gopinath Bordoloi. He also addressed a public meeting and led a 3.8-km roadshow from Sarusajai to the BJP headquarters, demonstrating the party's strength and popularity in the region. The new airport terminal, built with an investment of ₹4,000 crore, is designed to handle up to 1.3 crore passengers annually and reflects Assam's biodiversity and cultural heritage. The terminal's design incorporates locally sourced bamboo, Kaziranga-inspired landscaping, and orchid-themed architectural elements.
On the second day of his Assam visit, Modi paid tribute to the martyrs of the Assam Movement at Swahid Smarak Kshetra in Boragaon, Guwahati. He also performed the Bhumi Pujan for the Ammonia-Urea Fertilizer Project of Assam Valley Fertilizer and Chemical Company Ltd in Namrup, Dibrugarh. The fertilizer project, with an estimated cost of over ₹10,600 crore, aims to meet the fertilizer requirements of Assam and neighboring states.
