In Ludhiana, a 40-year-old man, Vijay Kumar, has been arrested for allegedly beating his eight-month pregnant wife, Pushpa, to death in a drunken rage. Kumar attempted to disguise the incident as a natural death, but injuries on the victim's body aroused suspicion.
According to Pushpa's brother, Ajay, the accused would often beat his wife after getting drunk because she wanted him to stop drinking. On the day of the incident, Kumar allegedly thrashed Pushpa while intoxicated. Kumar sustained injuries to his nose, suggesting that Pushpa may have fought back. However, due to her pregnancy, she was unable to continue fighting. After she collapsed, Kumar informed her parents that she had died of a fit, as she was prone to them. However, the bruises on her body led to further investigation.
The Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) stated that Pushpa's brother alleged that Vijay would beat Pushpa after getting drunk as she wanted him to quit alcohol. On Monday, too, Vijay thrashed Pushpa in an inebriated condition. Vijay was also injured on his nose, and police suspect she fought back to save her life. But she was eight months pregnant and could not continue fighting. After Pushpa collapsed, Vijay told her parents that she died a natural death. Pushpa was prone to fits, and Vijay claimed that she died after getting one. However, her body had bruises which made the matter suspicious.
This incident is a grim reminder of domestic violence and the dangers of alcohol abuse. It also highlights the vulnerability of pregnant women to abuse.
