In a surprising turn of events, Brooks Koepka, the five-time major champion, is set to leave LIV Golf after the 2025 season, citing family reasons. The announcement marks a significant shift in the landscape of professional golf, as Koepka was one of the Saudi-backed tour's signature signings when it launched in 2022. Meanwhile, Talor Gooch will take over as captain of Smash GC for the 2026 season.
Koepka's decision to step away from LIV Golf is driven by a desire to prioritize his family and spend more time at home. A statement released by his representatives emphasized that "Family has always guided Brooks' decisions, and he feels this is the right moment to spend more time at home". This move comes after a challenging period for Koepka and his wife, Jena, who suffered a miscarriage earlier this year. The couple also has a two-year-old son, Crew.
"We have amicably and mutually agreed that Brooks Koepka will no longer compete in the LIV Golf League, following the 2025 season," stated LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil. O'Neil acknowledged Koepka's impact on the game, saying, "We appreciate the significant impact he has had on the game and wish him continued success, both on and off the course".
Koepka's departure leaves a void in LIV Golf, as he was one of the league's most prominent figures. During his time with LIV, Koepka secured five trophies, including individual and team titles. In 2023, he became the first active LIV player to win a major, claiming victory at the PGA Championship.
Talor Gooch, who has been a teammate of Koepka's on Smash GC, will assume the captaincy role in 2026. Gooch expressed his gratitude to Koepka, stating, "He is one of the greatest competitors in the game and I have learned so much from him while being his teammate on Smash GC". He added, "Looking ahead, I am incredibly honored and excited to officially take on the captaincy role for the 2026 season".
The PGA Tour has also released a statement regarding Koepka's departure from LIV Golf. "Brooks Koepka is a highly accomplished professional, and we wish him and his family continued success," the tour said. However, the statement did not provide any clarity on whether Koepka would return to the PGA Tour.
Koepka's future in professional golf remains uncertain. While he is eligible to reapply for PGA Tour membership, he would likely face a suspension of 12 months following his last start in LIV Golf. He would also be eligible to play on the DP World Tour and is exempt into all four men's majors next year.
Despite leaving LIV Golf, Koepka's representatives stated that he "will continue to be a huge supporter of LIV Golf and wishes the league and its players continued success". "Brooks remains passionate about the game of golf and will keep fans updated on what's ahead," they added.
