Anaheim, CA – Danila Yurov's pair of goals propelled the Minnesota Wild to a 5-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night. Quinn Hughes contributed significantly with four assists in the game.
The Wild have been on a roll, earning at least a point in their last five games, boasting a record of 3-0-2. Their performance has been particularly strong over the last 30 games, where they've gone 22-4-4. Since acquiring Hughes in a trade with Vancouver on December 12, the team has gone 8-1-2.
Kirill Kaprizov, Yakov Trenin, and Nico Sturm also found the back of the net for Minnesota. Goaltender Filip Gustavsson stopped 26 shots, contributing to the Wild's dominant performance. For the Ducks, Beckett Sennecke and Troy Terry managed to score, but their efforts weren't enough to overcome Minnesota's strong play. Lukas Dostal, Anaheim's goalie, made 29 saves, including 17 in the second period.
The Wild opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 5:39 of the first period after Alex Killorn was penalized for tripping. Hughes's initial shot was blocked by Dostal, but Kaprizov capitalized on the ensuing scramble, scoring his 24th goal. In the second period, Minnesota extended their lead to 2-0 at 8:10 when Hughes's shot deflected off Trenin's stick and then off Yurov's skate before finding its way into the net. Sennecke responded for the Ducks, scoring off a faceoff at 14:45, reducing the deficit to 2-1. However, Trenin, assisted by Hughes, put the Wild ahead 3-1 with a shot from the right circle at 15:15 of the second period.
Yurov's second goal, redirecting another shot from Hughes, increased Minnesota's lead to 4-1 early in the third period. Sturm's goal from the left circle further solidified the Wild's lead, making it 5-1 with less than five minutes remaining in the game. Terry scored late in the third, but it was not enough.
Quinn Hughes's four assists not only powered the Wild's offense but also etched his name in the franchise record books. Hughes equaled the Wild record for points in a game by a defenseman and set a new franchise record for assists in a game by a defenseman. In the 10 games since joining the Wild, Hughes has accumulated 11 points, with one goal and 10 assists.
The Wild have dominated the Ducks in recent matchups, with a 20-1-0 record in their last 21 games against Anaheim.
Looking ahead, the Ducks will be playing at Washington on Monday night. The Wild will travel to Los Angeles to face the Kings on Saturday night.
