The act of rewarding employees with cars and other extravagant gifts has become increasingly common in India, particularly around Diwali. While specific instances of bosses gifting Mercedes and BMWs are less frequent, the trend of gifting cars in general is notable.
One prominent example is Savji Dholakia, a Surat-based diamond merchant, who has gained recognition for his generosity towards his employees. Dholakia, owner of Hare Krishna Exports, has a history of gifting cars, flats, and jewelry to his employees as Diwali bonuses. In 2016, he gifted 400 flats and 1,260 cars to his employees. In 2018, Dholakia distributed 600 cars to his staff.
More recently, in 2024, Mits Healthcare, a pharmaceutical company based in Haryana, gifted 15 SUVs to its employees as a Diwali gift. This was the second consecutive year that the company has gifted cars to its employees. In another instance, a Chandigarh-based pharma owner, MK Bhatia, gifted 51 luxury cars to his employees as a Diwali gift. Bhatia is the founder and chairman of the MITS Group. In the video, Bhatia was seen personally handing over the keys of brand-new Scorpio SUVs to his team members.
These acts of generosity are often seen as a way to motivate and reward employees for their hard work and dedication. They also generate significant media attention, boosting the company's public image. However, some have criticized such gestures, suggesting that companies should focus on providing better wages and benefits instead.
Despite the criticisms, the trend of gifting cars and other valuable items to employees appears to be continuing, with companies across India adopting this practice as a way to show appreciation and foster a positive work environment. These gifts range from Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai cars to more premium brands like Mercedes-Benz.
