Indian Super League Expansion: Sports Minister Confirms All 14 Clubs Participating, Season to Commence On Specified Date.

In a landmark decision bringing an end to weeks of speculation, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced today that the Indian Super League (ISL) will commence on February 14. The announcement confirms that all 14 clubs will participate in the upcoming season. This decision follows a period of uncertainty surrounding the league due to the absence of a commercial partner.

The Sports Minister addressed the media, stating that the decision was made after a meeting between government officials, the All India Football Federation (AIFF), and representatives from all 14 clubs, including prominent teams like Mohun Bagan and East Bengal. The resumption of the ISL provides much-needed clarity and stability to Indian football after a prolonged period of doubt.

AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey, who was also present at the announcement, shared details regarding the league's structure and financial arrangements. The ISL season will feature a total of 91 matches played on a home-and-away basis. Logistical planning for the matches is currently underway.

In addition to the ISL, the I-League, which had also been put on hold, will also resume around the same time, with all 11 clubs participating. However, the I-League season will be shorter, consisting of 55 matches.

To ensure the smooth operation of the ISL, a central pool of ₹25 crore has been established. The AIFF will contribute a significant portion of the funds until a commercial partner is secured. The AIFF will contribute ₹14 crore for the ISL and ₹3.2 crore for the I-League.

Furthermore, a Governing Council Board will be created to oversee the leagues and make future commercial decisions. The 2026 season will be the 12th season of the ISL and the fourth as the country's top tier league. Promotion and relegation will be introduced from this season onwards. A football video support system will also be implemented for the next five years.
