Connor McDavid's exceptional performance, highlighted by a hat trick, propelled the Edmonton Oilers to a decisive 6-2 victory over the Nashville Predators on Tuesday night. The Oilers (21-16-6) snapped a two-game losing streak with the win against the Predators (19-19-4), who have now lost two of their last three games.
McDavid opened the scoring on the power play at 8:53 of the first period, showcasing his speed and skill by cutting through the Predators' defense and tucking the puck past goaltender Juuse Saros. The Oilers captain extended the lead to 2-0 with a penalty shot goal at 15:53 of the second period, elevating the puck blocker-side. Just 22 seconds later, Curtis Lazar increased Edmonton's lead to 3-0, jamming a loose puck past Saros after a scramble in front of the net. Kasperi Kapanen, returning to the lineup after missing 36 games due to injury, scored his first goal of the season with just over a minute left in the second period, assisted by Leon Draisaitl, making it 4-0.
The Predators responded early in the third period, with Ryan O'Reilly scoring on a rebound at 3:48 to make it 4-1. Nick Blankenburg followed up just 15 seconds later with another goal, narrowing the score to 4-2. However, McDavid completed his hat trick at 13:46 of the third period, restoring the Oilers' four-goal lead. Draisaitl added another goal later in the third, solidifying the Oilers' dominant performance.
Connor Ingram earned the win in net for Edmonton with 24 saves, while Juuse Saros made 37 saves for Nashville.
McDavid's outstanding performance extended his point streak to 16 games, during which he has accumulated 36 points (15 goals, 22 assists). This marks his fourth point streak of 16 games or more, tying him with Denis Savard for the fourth-most in NHL history, behind Wayne Gretzky (16 times), Mario Lemieux (five times), and Peter Stastny (five times).
Draisaitl continued his strong play against the Predators, recording a goal and two assists. Over his last 16 games against Nashville since the 2019-20 season, Draisaitl has amassed 22 goals and 42 points.
The Oilers have demonstrated a penchant for winning when scoring first, with an impressive 18-1-3 record in such games. Edmonton's ability to contain Steven Stamkos, keeping him off the scoresheet, also proved crucial. Stamkos, after a slow start to the season, had been on a hot streak with 14 goals and 23 points in his previous 19 games.
