NHL Rumors: Oilers, Canucks, and Maple Leafs in the Spotlight
As the NHL season progresses, several teams are facing crucial decisions that could significantly alter their trajectory. The Edmonton Oilers are anticipating roster changes with returning players, while the Vancouver Canucks seem ready to embrace a rebuild, and the Toronto Maple Leafs are dealing with a potential surplus of goaltenders.
Oilers Prepare for Roster Adjustments
The Edmonton Oilers are on the verge of welcoming back Jake Walman and Tristan Jarry to their lineup. To make room, the team has already loaned Riley Stillman to the AHL. Head coach Kris Knoblauch suggested that Walman could return as early as this week, which would necessitate decisions on the blue line, potentially impacting players like Alec Regula or Ty Emberson. A Walman-Darnell Nurse pairing could provide more stability. Jarry is also expected to play soon, which could lead to Connor Ingram being sent back to the AHL. To manage the salary cap, Adam Henrique is expected to be placed on Long-Term Injured Reserve (LTIR), and an Andrew Mangiapane trade remains a possibility for creating longer-term financial flexibility. Despite speculation, a reunion with Evander Kane in Edmonton is highly unlikely due to both roster considerations and cap constraints.
Canucks Enter Rebuild Phase
The Vancouver Canucks appear to be entering a rebuild, though they are trying to quickly rebuild with younger players. The Canucks are reportedly still attempting to re-sign Kiefer Sherwood, but are continuing to listen to trade offers. According to Darren Dreger, the Canucks would like to move Jake DeBrusk, and there should be a market for him. DeBrusk has a full no-move clause until the end of next season, which then turns into a 15-team no-trade list.
Maple Leafs Face Goaltending Surplus
The Toronto Maple Leafs may find themselves with a surplus of NHL-caliber goalies. Anthony Stolarz is recovering from an upper-body injury sustained in November, and his return could create a logjam. In Stolarz's absence, Dennis Hildeby has performed well, leading to speculation about Stolarz becoming a trade chip if he returns to full health. TSN's Darren Dreger noted the Leafs are comfortable with their current goaltending situation, and having three capable goalies could allow them to address other needs, such as strengthening their blue line via trade. While some suggest moving Stolarz, his injury history might make Joseph Woll or Hildeby more attractive trade options.
