DRDO successfully tests man-portable anti-tank guided missile, hitting a moving target with precision and advanced technology.

On January 11, 2026, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted a flight test of the Man Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM) against a moving target at the KK Ranges in Ahilya Nagar, Maharashtra. This third-generation, fire-and-forget missile demonstrated its top-attack capability, marking a significant step towards its induction into the Indian Army and bolstering the nation's self-reliance in advanced defense technologies.

The MPATGM is an indigenously developed, third-generation anti-tank guided missile. It is designed with "fire-and-forget" technology, meaning it doesn't need further guidance after launch, allowing for quick and precise targeting. Equipped with an Imaging Infrared (IIR) homing seeker, the missile can operate effectively in both day and night combat scenarios. Its advanced features include an all-electric control actuation system, a high-performance fire control system, a tandem warhead capable of defeating modern main battle tanks, and an advanced propulsion system. The missile can be launched from a tripod or a military vehicle, increasing its operational flexibility.

The development of the MPATGM involved collaborative efforts from various DRDO laboratories. These include the Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL) in Hyderabad, Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) in Chandigarh, High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL) in Pune, and Instruments Research & Development Establishment (IRDE) in Dehradun. The Defence Laboratory in Jodhpur developed the thermal target system used in the test to simulate a tank. Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) are the development-cum-production partners for the missile.

The successful flight test has been lauded by key figures in the Indian government and defense establishment. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO, the development-cum-production partners, and the industry, calling it a significant stride towards "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" (self-reliant India). DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V Kamat echoed this sentiment, stating that the successful trial paves the way for the weapon system's induction into the Indian Army. The MPATGM is expected to significantly enhance the Indian Army's capabilities in countering armored threats on the battlefield.
