Blue Jackets Coaching Change: Evason and McCarthy Out After Failing to Meet Organizational Goals

Columbus, OH – In a move signaling the franchise's urgency to achieve higher performance levels, the Columbus Blue Jackets today announced the dismissal of Head Coach Dean Evason and Assistant Coach Steve McCarthy. The decision comes amidst a season where the team has struggled to meet expectations, currently sitting eighth in the Metropolitan Division. Veteran NHL coach Rick Bowness has been named as Evason's replacement, marking a significant shift behind the Blue Jackets' bench.

General Manager Don Waddell addressed the situation in a press release, stating, "This season has been a frustrating one for all of us and the bottom line is we are not performing at a level that meets our expectations". He acknowledged the shared responsibility for the team's shortcomings, emphasizing that the decision to relieve Evason and McCarthy of their duties was not taken lightly. Waddell also thanked Evason for his work last year under difficult circumstances, and McCarthy for his five years of commitment to the club.

Dean Evason's tenure with the Blue Jackets concludes just past the midway point of his second season. He had a 59-52-16 record in 127 games as head coach. While Evason inherited a challenging situation, the team's inability to consistently perform at the expected level ultimately led to the change. Steve McCarthy's departure ends his five-year run with the team, a tenure during which the defense faced persistent criticism.

Rick Bowness, the newly appointed head coach, brings a wealth of experience to Columbus. He most recently coached the Winnipeg Jets from 2022-2024, compiling a 98-57-9 record in 164 games and leading the team to playoff appearances in both seasons. Bowness also boasts a Stanley Cup Final appearance with the Dallas Stars. Throughout his NHL coaching career, Bowness holds a 310-408-48-37 (W-L-T-OT) record.

Waddell expressed confidence in Bowness's ability to steer the team in a new direction. "Rick Bowness is a tremendous coach with invaluable experience and knowledge, and he will bring a steadiness to our team at an important juncture in our season," Waddell stated. He highlighted Bowness's communication skills and his emphasis on structure and defensive solidity, expressing belief that Bowness is the right person to unlock the team's full potential.

Bowness conveyed his enthusiasm for the opportunity, stating, "I appreciate the opportunity to come to Columbus because it is a good organization with good people and this is a team that I think I can help improve". He expressed gratitude to Waddell and Blue Jackets President Mike Priest and conveyed his excitement to collaborate with the players and coaching staff.

The Blue Jackets' decision to bring in Bowness is viewed by some as one of the most exciting hires in franchise history. Bowness is known as a terrific coach, who capably teaches teams how to defend and is a consistent winner. Bowness will make his debut behind the bench tomorrow at home against Calgary, kicking off a stretch of seven of eight games at home leading into the Olympic break. The organization and its fans are hoping that Bowness's leadership will provide the spark needed to turn the season around and achieve the higher expectations set for the team.
