The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to announce the successor to current national president Jagat Prakash Nadda on January 20, 2026. The announcement will coincide with the date Nadda officially assumed the position in 2020.
According to party insiders, Nitin Nabin, the BJP's national working president and a former Bihar minister, is widely expected to be the sole candidate for the national president post. If elected, the 45-year-old Nabin would be the youngest person to hold the position.
The election process will commence with the filing of nominations on January 19, 2026. Following this, the nominations will be reviewed, and internal polling will be conducted "if necessary". The BJP has historically elected its national president unopposed.
Key BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and the current president, JP Nadda, are expected to propose and endorse Nabin's name. Other prominent BJP leaders from various states are also anticipated to be proposers.
The national council, the BJP's highest policy-making body, may convene immediately after the election of the new party president on January 20. All members of the national council present in Delhi for the election have been asked to remain in the capital on January 21 as well. The council is expected to ratify the election of the new BJP president and pass resolutions on key issues.
Jagat Prakash Nadda's tenure as BJP national president was initially extended until June 2024. Nadda assumed the role of national working president of the BJP in June 2019 and was elected as the BJP National President on January 20, 2020. He took over the position from Amit Shah. Nadda also serves as the Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers since 2024.
Nitin Nabin's appointment as National Working President of the BJP occurred in December 2025. Born on May 23, 1980, Nabin has served as a minister in the Bihar government, holding the Minister of Road Construction portfolio from 2024 to 2025. He represents the Bankipur constituency in the Bihar Legislative Assembly.
The BJP's constitution requires the election of presidents in at least 19 out of its 37 organizational states before the process to elect its national president can begin. The party had been working towards fulfilling this requirement, with elections and appointments of state chiefs taking place in the lead-up to the national president election.
