Inter Miami Eyes Liga MX Star: A New Striking Partner for Lionel Messi Emerges.

Inter Miami is reportedly targeting Liga MX star Germán Berterame to bolster their attack and provide Lionel Messi with a new strike partner. Several reports indicate that the MLS champions are prepared to pay Berterame's release clause, which is believed to be around $15 million, to secure the deal with Monterrey.

The 27-year-old Argentinian, who also represents Mexico internationally after gaining citizenship, has been a consistent goalscorer in Liga MX. Since joining Monterrey in 2022, he has recorded 67 goals and 15 assists in 152 matches across all competitions. His proven track record in Liga MX, where he has scored 99 goals in 245 matches since 2019, makes him a highly sought-after player. Berterame previously played in Argentina with San Lorenzo and Patronato before debuting in Liga MX with Atlético San Luis in 2019, where he won the 2021 Apertura Golden Boot.

Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas has confirmed the club's interest in Berterame, emphasizing their ambition to assemble a strong squad. Mas stated that there is an offer from Inter Miami for Germán Berterame, and the club aspires to give coach Javier Mascherano the tools he needs, viewing Berterame as a quality player who deserves to be on their roster. Monterrey's sporting director, José Antonio Noriega, has also acknowledged the approach from Inter Miami, calling the offer interesting for both Berterame and the club.

Berterame's potential arrival would add another dimension to Inter Miami's attack, providing a central attacking presence in front of Lionel Messi, who typically operates as a second forward or attacking midfielder. He would likely be a key starter for Miami.

However, to accommodate Berterame's Designated Player salary, Inter Miami would likely need to restructure their roster. This could involve selling or moving on from one of their U22 players, such as Tomás Avilés, Mateo Silvetti, or Telasco Segovia. Inter Miami has already made several moves this offseason, including acquiring goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair, and defenders Sergio Reguilón and Facundo Mura. Rodrigo De Paul's loan has also been made permanent, and David Ayala has been traded from the Portland Timbers.

Inter Miami is preparing for the 2026 season, with preseason preparations underway. The team is scheduled for a three-match South American tour across Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador before their MLS regular-season opener against LAFC on February 21.

The potential addition of Berterame highlights Inter Miami's commitment to building a competitive squad capable of defending their MLS Cup title and competing in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
