Rani Kapur, the 80-year-old mother of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, has filed a suit in the Delhi High Court seeking the revocation of the Rani Kapur Family Trust, alleging it was established without her informed consent and used to divert control of her assets. The suit marks a new development in the ongoing inheritance dispute over Sunjay Kapur's estate, estimated to be worth Rs 30,000 crore.
Rani Kapur alleges that her son, Sunjay, and his third wife, Priya Kapur, were the "chief masterminds" behind a conspiracy to transfer her assets into the trust without her knowledge or consent. She claims that this occurred after she suffered a stroke in 2017, during which time she was dependent on her son for handling her personal and financial matters. She alleges that they exploited her vulnerability and trust, leading her to sign documents, including blank papers, under the guise of routine administrative tasks.
According to the suit, Rani Kapur was led to believe that the RK Family Trust was simply a renamed or modified version of a previous trust arrangement where she remained the sole beneficiary. She claims she only discovered later, after Sunjay's death in June 2025, that the trust excluded her and directed benefits to other family members. Sunjay Kapur, the former chairman of auto-parts maker Sona Comstar, passed away at the age of 53 due to cardiac arrest during a polo match.
Rani Kapur's suit seeks a permanent injunction barring Priya Kapur and others from acting on behalf of the trust or using its assets. She also seeks a declaration that the trust is fraudulent and invalid, and requests the restoration of her estate to its condition before the trust's creation in 2017. The trust holds a significant stake in Sona Comstar, the flagship company of the Sona Group, valued at Rs 29,186 crore. While the precise valuation of the trust isn't disclosed, it is estimated to be worth several thousand crores.
The suit names 23 entities as defendants, including Priya Kapur and seven of Rani Kapur's grandchildren, among them Karisma Kapoor's children. Rani Kapur has also questioned the circumstances surrounding her son's death, alleging they were suspicious and unexplained. She claims Priya Kapur acted swiftly after Sunjay's death to take control of Sona Group and other Kapur holdings during the 13-day mourning period.
Rani Kapur alleges that Priya Kapur and unnamed co-conspirators engaged in "malafide and illegal acts" to deprive her of her share of the family wealth. She claims the alleged fraud came to light only after Sunjay Kapur's death, and the events that followed. She supports Karisma Kapoor's children's contention that Sunjay's will is possibly forged.
This legal action adds another layer to the ongoing dispute over the control and succession of Sunjay Kapur's assets. Rani Kapur claims that Priya's actions have left her "dispossessed from her own family assets". She seeks to reclaim her inheritance and legacy, alleging a complex web of illegal transactions was carried out to vest her assets in the RK Family Trust without her informed consent.
