The prospect of a Jawan sequel, which had been generating considerable buzz since the film's record-shattering release in 2023, appears to be on hold for the foreseeable future. Director Atlee, in a recent interview with India Today, has addressed the rumors surrounding Jawan 2 and his collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan, clarifying that while they will definitely work together again, a sequel to the blockbuster is not their immediate priority.
Atlee's Jawan (2023), starring Shah Rukh Khan in a dual role alongside Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi, took the box office by storm, grossing over ₹1,100 crore and becoming the highest-grossing Indian film of that year. The film, an action thriller centered around a vigilante who exposes corruption, resonated with audiences and critics alike, leading to speculation about a potential sequel.
While a Jawan sequel is not happening soon, Atlee has expressed his enthusiasm to collaborate with Shah Rukh Khan on future projects. "I think me and Shah Rukh sir will definitely work on something," Atlee stated, adding, "But Jawan 2, I personally feel, [can only happen] maybe after some years. It won't be the immediate next. But we will look into something. When that idea comes, or something happens organically, we will definitely do something".
Adding to the speculation, there were reports that Shah Rukh Khan had expressed interest in having Atlee direct Don 3, which Atlee has dismissed as a rumor. "Even that's a rumour, I also read it. No, nothing like that," Atlee clarified.
Despite Jawan 2 being on the back burner for now, Atlee has confirmed that he would consider making a sequel if a strong idea comes to him. In 2023, he mentioned that most of his films have open endings, leaving room for potential sequels. He also revealed plans to create a spin-off film centered around Vikram Rathore, Shah Rukh Khan's senior version in Jawan.
In the meantime, Atlee is also working on another pan-India film, tentatively titled AA22XA6, starring Allu Arjun and featuring Deepika Padukone. He has hailed Padukone as his "lucky charm," noting this is their second collaboration after Jawan.
For now, fans eager to see Shah Rukh Khan and Atlee reunite on screen will have to remain patient. While Jawan 2 isn't in immediate development, both the director and the superstar have expressed their desire to collaborate again, leaving the door open for future projects.
