Everton manager David Moyes has voiced concerns that modern football regulations are stifling the natural celebrations of managers. His comments came after he received a yellow card for running onto the pitch to celebrate Everton's late equalizer against Brighton in a recent Premier League match.
The incident occurred at the Amex Stadium when Everton substitute Beto scored in the seventh minute of added time, securing a 1-1 draw. Pascal Gross had earlier put Brighton ahead in the 73rd minute. Overjoyed by the dramatic equalizer, Moyes ran onto the field to celebrate with his players, resulting in a booking from the referee.
Moyes expressed his frustration with the current climate, stating that football is "killing" the kind of uninhibited celebrations that fans enjoy. He referenced David Pleat, a former manager known for his exuberant celebrations, suggesting that such displays of emotion are becoming a thing of the past due to increasing restrictions. "We're killing it that the managers can't come out of their technical area to celebrate a goal, knee sliding, do things which give you people quite a bit to talk about,” Moyes lamented.
Despite the yellow card, the Everton boss insisted that he would not curb his enthusiasm in the future. "I bloody will do it again!" he declared. He even joked that if he were more mobile, he might have attempted a knee slide, adding that it would have likely resulted in the same punishment.
The match itself saw Everton struggle in the first half but improve significantly after the break. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall missed a key opportunity before Gross scored his first goal for Brighton since returning from Borussia Dortmund. Brighton appeared to be heading for victory until Beto's late goal, which sparked wild celebrations among the Everton players and staff. Jake O'Brien's shot was initially saved by Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, but Beto was on hand to tap in the rebound.
Moyes acknowledged the fortunate nature of the equalizer, admitting that it seemed unlikely Everton would score. Reflecting on a past incident, Moyes humorously recounted how he would have reacted if he was the player. In 2012, then-Liverpool striker Luis Suarez celebrated a goal against Everton by mockingly diving in front of Moyes, who had previously accused Suarez of diving. Moyes joked that he would have "run on to the pitch and dived in front of Luis Suarez" had Everton scored a late winner in that game.
